I hope you will take a few minutes to check out the context of the Scripture, found in Genesis chapters 1 – 3.
At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.
When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the LORD God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the LORD God among the trees. Then the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”
He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”
Who told you that you were naked?” the LORD God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”
(Genesis 3:7-11, NLT)
We have all had that moment. The moment where you realize that what you have done is wrong. The moment you realize that you made a terrible mistake. The moment that inescapable shame sweeps over you. Regret. This moment is usually followed by desperate measures to cover and hide what was done. The problem is that we, in our own abilities, are incapable of effectively “covering” ourselves. Left without protection. We just cannot make things “right” again.
But Love. God is Love. (1 John 4:8b) …Love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8b)
And the LORD God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife. (Genesis 3:21, NLT)
Just as God provided a sacrifice and covering for Adam and Eve, He has also provided a covering and protection for us through Jesus’ sacrifice. He loved us so much that He gave His One and Only Son. His Love covered our sins!
A reminder though, that we should always be mindful and grateful of God’s merciful kindness – and never take it for granted. We should never use God’s love and the freedom that He has given us as an excuse to do wrong! (Reference 1 Peter 2:16) “Dear Friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins (Hebrews 10:26, NLT).”
